Founded in Geneva in 1893, La Patrie suisse brought together current affairs, cultural life, public figures, travel and Swiss landscapes. The photographed issues include material on the National Exhibition, mountaineering, military manoeuvres, Édouard Marti and an international shooting match.
The printed title page states ‘third volume’ and bears the date 1896. An old manuscript note adds ‘from 15 April to the end of December’, probably corresponding to nos. 67 to 85. A terminal leaf, however, is marked no. 97 and dated 9 June 1897, showing that the binding contains a continuation or later addition.
Condition and checks
Purple cloth spine and marbled-paper boards. Rubbing, scratches, stains, bumped corners and worn headcaps; losses of paper along the edges.
Leaves yellowed and locally browned, with foxing, stains, creases and small marginal tears visible in the photographs.
Sewing and hinges are strained and several gatherings appear loose. Flat opening and repeated handling are not recommended.
No exhaustive collation has been completed. The presence of no. 97 after a title dated 1896 is disclosed; gaps, additions or binding errors may remain.
